“Virtual Reality” (VR) is a computer-generated environment that can be experienced through visuals and, in most cases, sound. In virtual reality, worlds can be artificially created using a computer. It is often possible to interact with this virtual world. There are different ways to experience virtual worlds, for example, through multiple screens or using VR glasses. Areas of application include education, entertainment, and even therapy. For more information, visit our VR page.
-
VR glasses, also known as a virtual reality headset, are a pair of opaque glasses in which two screens have been integrated in place of the normal lenses. Virtual reality can be displayed on these screens. When you use them, you get the impression that you are actually in a different world. Thanks to built-in sensors, the VR glasses also track head movements, allowing you to look around in the virtual world and, in most cases, interact with it.

Virtual reality can be used in many ways to benefit rehabilitation. VR makes it possible to practice potentially dangerous situations without any actual risk. In addition, numerous activities that are difficult to replicate in everyday life can be performed repeatedly in virtual reality without any issues. Moreover, virtual reality can be used anywhere thanks to mobile devices. A large number of scientific publications suggest the use of VR for the therapy and treatment of various conditions. To learn more about this scientific basis, please visit our Studies page.
-
Virtual reality makes it possible to safely practice activities that are potentially dangerous or difficult to replicate in everyday life, repeatedly. When making coffee, for example, there is no hot water in VR, and an unlimited number of cups of coffee can be brewed until all steps of the process can be performed safely.
Additionally, mobile devices enable location-independent therapy in virtual reality.
The use of VR for treating various conditions has already been investigated in numerous scientific studies, and its use has been recommended. You can read more about this in the Science section under Studies.

The VR headsets we use can also be worn with glasses. An additional pre-installed spacer is supplied.
-
No, VR is generally not harmful to your health. However, some people are advised against using it due to pre-existing medical conditions. Before use, please read the manufacturer’s safety and warning instructions.
-
When first using virtual reality, some people report mild nausea, mild headaches, or mild dizziness. These symptoms are also known as motion sickness. They sometimes occur when the vestibular system and the eyes send conflicting signals to the brain. For example, the vestibular system “says,” “We’re not moving, we’re sitting,” while the eyes report, “We’re riding a roller coaster and moving very quickly.” This conflict between the eyes and the vestibular system can cause “confusion” in the brain, leading to nausea, dizziness, or headaches.
To minimize the risk of motion sickness, we take care to ensure that none of our applications generate conflicting signals between the eyes and the vestibular system.
You can find more detailed information about side effects in the health and safety warnings provided by the VR headset manufacturer here.
-
We make every effort to prevent motion sickness, which includes dizziness, headaches, or nausea caused by VR. If you do feel nauseous, immediately stop using the application and only resume the exercise once the symptoms have subsided. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms do not subside.
To prevent this from happening in future sessions, make sure the VR headset is properly adjusted on your head and that your vision is clear. Also, be sure to take regular breaks.
Please also follow the health and safety instructions for the VR headset!

Requirements for use
-
teora® mind is used for people whose independence, self-determination, or ability to manage daily life is significantly limited due to cognitive deficits. These cognitive limitations are associated with conditions that affect the nervous system. These may include, for example, strokes, Parkinson’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, or traumatic brain injuries.
-
teora® mind can be used starting at rehabilitation phase C.
-
To use teora® mind, patients must be able to read and have intact language comprehension. Furthermore, the application is intended for patients with a score of more than 20 on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) or more than 12 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA).
-
teora® body is used to promote mobility and functional recovery, particularly in the shoulder and elbow. It reinforces movement patterns, promotes relaxation, improves quality of life, and encourages users to be more active.
-
teora® mind & teora® body: All exercises can be performed while seated. Therefore, you need at least a seat and about 1.50 meters of clear space in every direction so that you can extend your arms. You can also move around by walking while using the app, if you wish. In this case, you need a clear area of 2×2 meters.
-
teora® mind: To use the device, users must have mobility in at least one arm and one hand. Based on the current exercises, this also includes the ability to voluntarily bend and straighten the index, middle, and ring fingers. The user must be able to turn their head approximately 60° to the right and left. Use with visual aids is possible without any problems; however, vision and perception in both eyes are essential. In addition, intact language comprehension and reading ability are required.
teora® body: Starting from an upright sitting or standing position: to perform the exercises, at least one arm must be able to move to the left and right (horizontally) at a 60° angle and up and down (vertically) at a 100° angle, either bent or extended. However, the exercises can also be performed in a non-upright sitting or standing position; performing the exercises while lying completely flat is not possible. The ability to consciously bend and extend the index finger and thumb is also required for the current exercises. The head must be able to turn approximately 30° to the right and left. Use of visual aids is possible without any issues; however, vision and perception in both eyes are essential. In addition, intact language comprehension and reading ability are required.
-
You do not need any additional technical equipment. All you need is a stable, password-protected Wi-Fi network.
-
The product is contraindicated for individuals who have experienced epileptic seizures in the past due to visual stimuli, patients with an acute migraine, and patients who have balance issues.
During the first few uses, you may experience motion sickness (dizziness, headaches, nausea). In this case, stop using the device and resume use as desired once the symptoms subside. If the symptoms do not subside, please contact your doctor.

Other questions
-
You can find the user manual for teora® mind on our eIFU page.
-
The uniqueness of teora® mind largely stems from the fact that virtual reality allows for the simulation of real-life situations, enabling users to practice dealing with actual problems they encounter in daily life. In our view, this is not sufficiently possible without VR.
